What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. At Clinique Dentaire Écladent, our dentists perform extractions only when a less invasive option would be ineffective, or if keeping the tooth will compromise your oral health.
Common reasons for pulling a tooth include excessive tooth damage and problematic wisdom teeth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the third molars that typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Sometimes, the jaws are too small, causing irregular eruption. As a result, they may emerge in the wrong position or at the wrong angle, making cleaning even more difficult.
In other cases, wisdom teeth remain partially impacted (only emerging partially from the bone/gum) or fully impacted (remaining inside the bone/gum). Regardless of the case, their presence can lead to problems, which is why it's important to monitor them closely.
Repairing Excessive Damage
Your dentist always does their best to save your natural teeth, but certain oral health conditions can jeopardize the health of your teeth. An injury, gum disease, or deep cavity may require an extraction.
If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted, your dentist will discuss with you options for replacing the tooth, such as a bridge, crown, or denture.
